English for Academic Purposes (focus on Intercultural communication (ICC), Research and referencing tools (RR), and Academic writing (AW): principles and training)
The ICC part consists of five sessions in which reasons for culturally different communication styles are covered. The deeper insight into an English-speaking environment helps participants to empower their presentations and enhance the desired argumentation quality in their academic writing.
• Impact of culture on communication in ICC (intro)
• Rhetorical devices for power of speech (logos, pathos and ethos in ICC)
• Understanding parameters of difference in ICC (motives for different interactional patterns in different cultures; Hofstede, Trompenaars, and Lewis)
• Concepts of rapport management and communication principles in speaking and writing (Spencer-Oatey)
The RR part will be offered by the UPCE Library staff and will focus on tools for effective research and referencing.
• Research and referencing tools
The AW part consists of six sessions that focus on specific principles and features of writing in English. In many cases, the principles of good texts in English are different from the principles of good texts in Czech, so these sessions will help writers understand what is expected from academic texts in terms of structure and style.
• The difference between Czech and English writing styles
• The structure of an argument in English writing
• Paragraph structure and cohesion
• Sentence structure in English texts
• Introductions and conclusions
• Academic writing style
English level required: B2 and higher
